Indian Army Chief to Nepal Gorkha Regiment : Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi has appealed to the Nepali Army Chief to resume the recruitment of Gorkha soldiers in the Indian Army. The recruitment of Gorkha soldiers in the Indian Army was stopped for the last four years. Although earlier this ban was done due to the Corona epidemic, but later Nepal had stopped the youth of its Gorkha community from recruiting in the Indian Army under the controversial Agneepath scheme.
It is noteworthy that Agneepath Scheme was launched in 2022. Under which the army recruits soldiers for 4 years and they are called “Agniveer”. However, there is no provision for retirement benefits in this scheme. 75 percent of Agniveers from each batch are demobilized after 4 years of service. Whereas the remaining 25 percent Agniveers are included in the regular cadre on the basis of merit and requirement of the army. That is why this scheme was surrounded by controversies.
Nepal did not agree to the terms of Agniveer scheme
Nepal did not agree to the recruitment of its citizens into the Indian Army on the terms of the Agniveer Scheme. Nepal said that this plan violates the provisions of the trilateral India-Nepal-Britain agreement of 1947. Nepal expressed concern that after the completion of 4 years of service of Gorkha soldiers, questions arise about their chances of getting re-employment.

There was no impact on the Indian Army due to non-recruitment of new Gorkhas.
At the annual Army Commanders’ press conference held on Monday (January 13), Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi said, “The absence of recruitment of new Gorkha youth from Nepal has not affected the strength of the Indian Army.” He said, “We have submitted our proposal to the Nepal government and now we are waiting for their response.” However, it has not been clarified from Nepal as to when the recruitment can start again.
