An unusual wedding gesture by a couple from Chhattisgarh’s Kapu village has garnered media attention. It has been reported that they chose to take an oath on the Indian Constitution to get married rather than observing the customs of their community. They had greater faith in the Constitution than in customary marital ceremonies. The Times of India claims that the couple married on December 18 without performing customary rituals like ‘Sath pheras’ and ‘Band Baaja.’ Many, including members of their community, were impressed by their act.
The outlet claims that Pratima Lahre, the bride, and Eman Lahre, the groom, made the decision to forego all traditional wedding customs. Neither the ‘sindoor’ rites nor the ‘mangal sutra’ ceremony were performed by the couple.
Instead, the couple decided to take an oath based on the Indian Constitution, promising to support one another for the rest of their lives. In front of a picture of Dr BR Ambedkar, the man who drafted the Indian Constitution, they made the promise. By exchanging garlands and walking around the statue of Dr BR Ambedkar, they formally declared their union.
Talking about why take an oath on the Constitution, Eman Lahre, the groom, said that it was primarily to cut down on lavish costs. “This type of marriage saves on extravagant expenses. We decided to tie the knot with our families’ consent, avoiding unnecessary expenditure,” said Lahre as quoted by ToI.

The event was praised by many, who described it as a “meaningful approach to marriage” and said that more ceremonies of this kind may serve as models for others. In addition, the parents and community members of the couple have congratulated them on their choice and offered their blessings to the newlyweds.
All of this took place in the Chattisgarh district of Jashpur, in the village of Kapu, 350 kilometres from Raipur and a long way from the chaos at Parliament House in Delhi. Since the couple is from the Satnami community, they decided to tie the knot on December 18, the anniversary of Guru Ghasidas’ birth.
