President Yun Suk-yeol narrowly escaped an impeachment motion in Parliament on Saturday (7 December 2024), while a huge crowd gathered outside Parliament demanding his removal from office. However, despite remaining in office, Yoon and his close associates are facing several investigations, including an investigation into alleged rebellion.
First South Korean president to be banned from leaving the country
The Justice Ministry confirmed on Monday that Yoon Suk has become the first South Korean president to be banned from leaving the country. At a parliamentary hearing on Monday, an MP was asked whether Yun had been banned from leaving the country. According to media reports, Bae Sang-up, the immigration services commissioner at the ministry, replied, “Yes, that’s correct.”
Former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun and former Interior Minister Lee Sang-min are also under travel bans for their roles in last week’s events. General Park Un-soo, the officer in charge of martial law operations, and defense counter-intelligence commander Yoo In-hyung have also been barred from leaving the country. Investigators detained Park on Monday for further questioning.
