Vishwa Rajkumar, a 20 -year -old Indian college student, surprised everyone by winning Memory League World Championship. This is an online competition in which the contestants are given challenging tasks like remembering the order of 80 random numbers, which is to be done as fast as people can tie a shoe lace.
Famous neuroscientist Einor Magwire, who died in January, studied mental players such as prince and found that many people use ancient Roman ‘Method of Loci’ (Memory Palace) technology. In this technique, a big house is imagined and memories are kept in different rooms. Walking mentally in the house makes part of the brain, hippocampus, active, which helps to remember.
New York Times asked Rajkumar about his memories of his memories. Their answers were something like this:
How do you prepare for Memory League World Championship?
‘Hydration is very important because it helps your brain. When you remember things, usually you speak inside, and keep the throat clean. Like you are reading a book, then you do not read it loudly, but you speak inside. If you do not drink much water then your speed can be reduced, but if you drink more water then your speed can increase.
What does your memory palace look like?
‘Suppose my first place is my room, the other place is the kitchen, the third place is the hall, the fourth place is my balcony, and then the bathroom. If I am remembering the list of 10 words, then I make a story of every two words and keep them in one place. For the next two words, I make another story in another place. In this way the memory palace helps me remember the order.
Can a lot be kept in these rooms?
‘A lot can be kept. If I am remembering 100 words, then I make a story of every two words. If I use the memory palace, I will remember which word was first and which later.
How was a challenge experience in Memory League World Championship?
‘You are given 80 random numbers on screen. You have to remember them as soon as possible, then you get a recall sheet on pressing a button. I rectified 80 numbers correctly. My fastest time was 13.5 seconds, ie about six points per second.
Do you think it’s amazing?
‘Yes, I realized. I was crying.
What is the plan ahead?
After completing the college, perhaps I will try to open a memory institute in India by becoming a memory trainer, so that more people can learn these techniques. My goal is to make it big.
