Germany Christmas Market Attack: Five people died and more than 200 were injured in a horrific attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg city of Germany. In this attack, a car ran into the crowd due to which a child was also among the dead. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has strongly condemned the attack, calling it ‘senseless and horrific’.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said “We condemn the horrific and senseless attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg. Many precious lives have been lost and many have been injured. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims.” The Ministry also informed that the Indian Mission has provided all possible assistance to the injured and their families.
Seven Indians injured, three discharged from hospital
According to the information, seven Indian citizens were injured in the attack, out of which three have been discharged from the hospital. The Indian Mission is in constant touch with the injured Indians and their families. The suspect in the attack, 50-year-old Saudi-origin doctor Taleb, has been arrested. He lived under permanent residence in Germany.
Saxony-Anhalt state Premier Rainer Hasloff confirmed that the attack was the work of an individual and that there was no longer any danger in the city. Police investigated the possibility of explosives in the car, but no explosives were found.
Police is investigating the matter
Taleb, who has been living in Germany for nearly two decades, has worked as a psychiatrist in a rehabilitation clinic. However, he had been on leave since October due to illness and leave. Support for anti-Islam and right-wing groups has been seen in his social media activities.
German Interior Minister Nancy Fesser said the suspect’s ‘Islamophobia’ was clear, but it was too early to say anything about his motive. Security in Magdeburg has been increased and the police are investigating the matter in depth.
