A section of a newly constructed road in Ahmedabad caved in on Monday, May 5, nearly swallowing an autorickshaw and injuring its driver. The incident occurred on Makarba Main Road, which had been expanded into a six-lane thoroughfare just six months ago. According to Bhaskar English, the autorickshaw plunged front-first into a large crater that suddenly formed beneath it. The impact left the front wheel stuck deep inside the hole, while the rear wheels remained perched above ground. Images from the scene quickly went viral on social media, showing the dramatic sight of the auto partially submerged and bystanders crowding around it.

The autorickshaw driver, identified as Ranjitbhai, recounted the terrifying moment. “I was driving as usual and didn’t notice a small pothole. As soon as I passed over it, the ground gave way and a huge crater opened up,” he said. “My head hit the glass and I started bleeding from my face.”

Despite the injuries, Ranjitbhai managed to climb out of the vehicle on his own. Local police soon arrived and took steps to manage the traffic and secure the area to prevent further accidents.

He received facial injuries after hitting the glass inside the rickshaw which caused cuts and bleeding. According to the report, he was taken to the hospital immediately for treatment.

Ahmedabad witnessed unseasonal weather conditions at the start of the week with dust and thunderstorms along with rainfall sweeping across several parts of Gujarat. Reports stated that at least 14 people have died in separate rain-related incidents across the state.

The city’s municipal corporation received reports of 75 trees being uprooted. At least 15 vehicles were damaged after trees fell on them during the storm, Gujarat Samachar reported.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rainfall in the coming days and issued an orange alert for North Gujarat, Central Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch regions. These areas are likely to experience heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. Districts such as Kutch, Patan and Banaskantha may see wind speeds reaching up to 80 km per hour.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, follow safety guidelines and avoid unnecessary travel as the unseasonal weather conditions are expected to persist across the state.
