Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal recently shared an update on the much-discussed Chief of Staff role, which initially stirred controversy over a proposed Rs 20 lakh joining fee. Goyal revealed that the company received over 18,000 applications for the position. After evaluating the candidates, 30 exceptional individuals were offered roles, with 18 joining Zomato and its partner companies in key positions.

Addressing concerns, Goyal emphasised that these professionals are being well-compensated for their contributions and clarified that no one had to pay to work for the company. He also noted that these hires stand out for their long-term vision and commitment to success rather than short-term gains.

Sharing the update on LinkedIn, Goyal wrote, “We started with 18,000+ applications and had the privilege of meeting over 150 incredibly talented individuals. From this, 30 exceptional people received offers and 18 have already joined Zomato (and other group companies like Blinkit) in high-impact roles. They’re being handsomely compensated for the value they bring and nobody paid anything to work with us.”

He further highlighted the diverse backgrounds of these candidates, including startup founders, engineers who rebuilt entire tech stacks over a weekend and operators skilled in scaling businesses. Among them are also a few brilliant young minds fresh out of college, whom Goyal believes will play a key role in shaping the company’s future.

Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “It’s inspiring to see such a thorough and thoughtful approach to hiring, Deepinder. It’s clear that Zomato is not just building a team, but a community of visionary leaders.”

An individual shared, “That’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack, but it seems like you’ve found a whole bunch of needles. Congrats on finding such exceptional talent with a long-term mindset. Can’t wait to see what the future holds for Zomato with this amazing team.”

“This hiring update is so cool—just like you Deepinder. Big cheers to the hard work and patience it takes to find people who think long-term and make a huge difference.” a comment read.

One more added, “You are setting a good example Deepinder Goyal by informing everyone that organisations should revert to candidates who apply. Many organisations do not have the fundamental courtesy to revert to the people who have reached out to them, when it is so much easy these days with technology.”

Since the post was shared on LinkedIn it has garnered over seven thousand views.
