World’s Oldest Ice : Scientists have succeeded in extracting about 1.2 million years old ice from the depths of Antarctica, which may possibly be the oldest ice in the world. Working in extreme cold of -35 degrees Celsius, the team drilled a 2.8 kilometer long ice core, which was filled with extremely ancient air bubbles that could provide important information about the Earth’s climate history.
After four years of hard work, racing with 7 other countries, the international team reached under the ice sheet of Antarctica and extracted a 9,186 feet long sample.
EPIC What did the co-ordinator say about this snow??
“This core is a time machine, recording an extraordinary archive of the Earth’s climate,” said Carlo Barbante, coordinator of the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA), the team that found the ice core. It is noteworthy that till now the ice core has been cut into several pieces of 1 meter each to study it. It is being claimed that this is the oldest drilled ice on Earth, inside which the answers to the mysteries related to the evolution of Earth’s climate may be hidden.
Earth’s climate potential will be known
“Air bubbles trapped inside ice cores provide a direct snapshot of past atmospheric composition, including greenhouse gas concentrations such as carbon dioxide and methane,” Carlo Barbante told CNN via email.
He said, “By analyzing them, we can find out how the Earth’s climate responds to climate change, such as solar radiation, volcanic activity and orbital variations. This data gives us information from hundreds of thousands of years to the present, 1.2 million years ago. “For years and hopefully beyond, it helps to better understand the tight relationship between greenhouse gases and global temperatures.”
An international team of scientists announced they’ve successfully drilled one of the oldest ice cores yet, penetrating nearly 2 miles to Antarctic bedrock to reach ice they say is at least 1.2-million-years old. pic.twitter.com/KBbY6adwMv

Why did the Ice Age period suddenly change on Earth?
However, scientists also hope that this ice will help them understand the reason for the sudden change in the Earth’s Ice Age period one million years ago. Recently, a research shows that due to this incident, the extinction of ancient human ancestors was almost certain.
