The quick commute app Blinkit posted a job opening for a Software Development Engineer in Bengaluru and after a user shared images of the overwhelmingly positive response, the post went viral on social media. A remarkable 13,451 people applied for the position in a single day, according to the images shared on X (previously Twitter). The internet was startled by the overwhelming number of applications.

As soon as the post went viral, many people commented about how competitive the job market is. The majority of applicants were professionals at the entry-level (74 per cent), with only 13 per cent being at the senior level. According to the data, 12 per cent of candidates had a master’s degree and 86 per cent had a bachelor’s.

“1 opening, 13,451 applicants,” the caption to the post reads. Shared on March 12, the post garnered over 1 lakh views. The internet took advantage of the opportunity to target the job market.

Several users voiced their concerns about the increased demand for tech jobs relative to available vacancies as a result of the excessive volume of applications. Others argued over whether the large volume of applications was caused by layoffs, economic instability, or a spike in the number of recent graduates joining the workforce.

A user jokingly commented, “I don’t think they should take it to day 2 lol”

Another said, “Just start your own company, at this point you have a better chance of succeeding than getting a job.”

“I have tried to hire people, trust me when I say 50% blindly apply, 30% don’t even have the right skills, 15% don’t pick up your calls and 5% will reject offers in the end,” an individual wrote on X.

“And imagine getting your resume shortlisted in this,” another user remarked.

Given the surge in applications, Blinkit may require more than an “instant” delivery approach to navigate the current recruiting craze.

According to data from TeamLease Edtech, the hiring activity in the Indian IT job market in 2024 decreased by almost 7 per cent from the year before, indicating serious difficulties in the field. Global economic uncertainty and changing macroeconomic conditions were major causes of the decline.
